梵字「キリーク」に込められた意味

「キリーク」は、仏さまを一文字で象徴する梵字（種字）のひとつです。

十二支にそれぞれ守護本尊を当てる十二支守り本尊の考え方では、子年（ねずみ）の守護本尊である千手観音菩薩、そして戌年（いぬ）・亥年（いのしし）の守護本尊である阿弥陀如来を表す種字として「キリーク」が用いられます。

千手観音菩薩は、多くの手と眼によって人々を見守り、さまざまな苦しみに手を差し伸べる、深い慈悲を象徴する菩薩。阿弥陀如来は、限りない光と慈悲によって人々を救いへと導く仏さまとされています。

本デザインでは、その「キリーク」を中心に据え、周囲を蓮・雲・円の意匠で構成しました。

“The Meaning Behind the Sanskrit Character ‘Kiriku’”

“Kiriku” is one of the Sanskrit characters (seed syllables) that symbolize the Buddha in a single character.

In the concept of the Twelve Zodiac Guardian Deities—which assigns a guardian deity to each of the twelve zodiac signs—“Kiriku” is used as the seed syllable representing both the Thousand-Armed Kannon Bodhisattva, the guardian deity of the Year of the Rat, and Amida Tathagata, the guardian deity of the Years of the Dog and the Boar.

The Thousand-Armed Kannon Bodhisattva symbolizes profound compassion, watching over people with her many hands and eyes and extending a helping hand to those suffering in various ways. Amida Tathagata is regarded as the Buddha who guides people toward salvation through boundless light and compassion.

In this design, the “Kiriku” is placed at the center, surrounded by motifs of lotus flowers, clouds, and circles.

The lotus, which blooms as a pure flower from the mud, symbolizes purity and enlightenment; the clouds, often seen in Buddhist art, evoke a sense of the sacred; and the circle enveloping the entire composition embodies thoughts of harmony, fulfillment, and the bonds of fate.
